Recently an article appeared on the Internet about a man who fell into the Yellowstone hot spring and completely disappeared in a few hours. It can be a painful story, but you have to admit that it is scientifically hypnotizing one, how much you do not like. There were various comments on this topic, but one of the most common was something like “Well, now I know where to hide the dead body in an emergency situation.”

Some people may find this comment inappropriate, but if you think this dark humor is funny, then congratulations, you are probably very smart. This is stated in a recent study published by Cognitive Processing magazine that there is a strong relationship between dark humor and high IQ.

The study involved 156 people, men and women with an average age of 33, who headed the Vienna Medical University. Topics were from different entities. First, the researchers gave the subject a generalized IQ test, including verbal and non-verbal questions of reasoning. After the test was completed, they were asked to watch and respond to 12 cartoons of the German cartoonist Uli Stein, all of whom had a rather gloomy component.

Under the direction of the Vienna Medical University, 156 people – a mixture of men and women with an average age of 33 years and from different educational institutions – for the first time received a generalized IQ test, including verbal and non-verbal questions of reasoning. Then they were asked to look at 12 cartoons and respond to them by the German cartoonist Uli Stein, all of whom had a rather gloomy component.

In one of the cartoons there is a couple talking to a medical professional, and a woman is pregnant. The doctor continues to tell them: “For starters, here’s a good news: your child will always find a place to park.” Noticias de la Sierra de Cadiz

You will probably have a different reaction to this than to the others, but if it provokes laughter or two at the same time, as long as you doubt that you are smiling normally at such a joke, you are probably humorous. Dark humor has always been associated with people of a kind of melancholy behavior, and has rarely been associated with people with higher cognitive functions.

But the results of this study show a completely different story. According to the results, subjects who evaluated and understood the jokes scored the highest score in the IQ tests and the lowest on the tests for negative moods and general aggression. They were also more educated.

On the other hand, the subject, who absolutely hated jokes, gained an average value in the IQ tests and showed a high level of aggression and negative sentiment. And, finally, those who moderately understood and saw humor in them, also had average intelligence ratings, but they were only averaging aggressively by nature and had basically a positive outlook on life.

What does it mean? Well, dark humor is a complicated form of humor, and these gloomy stories can be postponed for many, but if you are able to see though the darkness and instinctively chuckle over the ingenious design of the language – which in general contributes to a good mood – you have a higher level of cognitive processing.

This means that you do not have to worry if a dark joke makes you chuckle or two, while everyone else is shocked, it does not mean that you are evil, you are just a little smarter than the average.
